15/04/13: Conserving Peru's anchovies; Sainsbury's introduces sustainable pangasius; long wait for POMS-resistant oysters

Anchovies play a crucial role in aquaculture. These five-inch wonders make up a huge percentage of fishmeal. This article on the Global Post gives a great overview of the industry in Peru and measures successive governments ave taken to protect this important fish.

British supermarket chain, Sainsbury's has introduced ASC-certified farmed pangasius in 150 of its stores. Three new products, including smoked and floured fillets, hit the shelves earlier this month and will go on sale in a further 250 stores in May.

Oyster farmers in Australia face a wait of up to eight years before a POMS-resistant breed is commercially available. Pacific oyster mortality syndrome wiped out an estimated 10 million oysters in the Hawkesbury River earlier this year.
