05/09/13: Rise of Chinese feed pigment industry; Brazil's tilapia project

The rise of the Chinese aquaculture over the last 40 years has had a beneficial effect on other domestic industries including the feed Chinese feed pigment sector.

Capsanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, apo-ester and astaxanthin are the five main feed pigments on the market and are common ingredients in a variety of feeds.

The feed pigment market has experienced two changes since it started in the 1990s; the replacement of synthetic products by natural ones and foreign brands by domestic ones.

This article examines how the pigment industry has responded to these changes.

The Brazilian government has joined forces with an Israeli company to develop tilapia breeding techniques in the state of Parana.

The region has been chosen by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) as the ideal location for the initiative which it hopes will revolutionize the fish breeding industry in the area.

The Israeli company, Mitrelli will be working in close cooperation with the Brazilian MPA, operating a turnkey service encompassing fish rearing right the way through to marketing.
