06/09/13: Aquaculture predicted to surpass wild capture by 2015; Biomin's new premix plant; salt field aquaculture in Australia

Aquaculture is predicted to surpass wild capture fisheries as the main source of fish for human consumption by 2015 according to statistics released by the FAO.

Capture fisheries’ output is projected to rise by only 5 percent by 2022 with aquaculture increasing by 35 percent.

World fisheries and aquaculture production is expected to reach about 181 mt by 2022, a 18 percent growth compared to the 2010-12 base period. Most of the production gains will come from aquaculture

However, aquaculture production growth is anticipated to slow to 2.4 percent per year, compared to 5.9 percent for the previous decade.

Biomin is to open a new premix plant in Vietnam in October 2013.

The 4.7 ha facility will be fitted with a micro dosing system and house a laboratory with several cutting-edge technologies, including a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system.

“This will enable BIOMIN to provide the highest possible level of nutritional and mycotoxin analytical services for its customers. On top of that, the LC-MS/MS will also support the Biomin
Mycotoxin Survey Program, strengthening the position of Biomin as the market leader in this field," says Jan Vanbrabant, CEO Asia Pacific, Biomin

This article looks at a discussion taking place in Western Australia surrounding what to do with Dry Creek's salt fields. One of the options is converting the fish farm alongside a housing development.
