11/12/13: Ghana calls to stop fish imports; Chilean authorities visit China; EU bans fish discards

The Ghana Aquaculture Association (GAA) has called on the government to stop fish imports into the country following a negative impact on local production. According to GAA members, despite the high demand for tilapia, local farmers were facing huge challenges selling their fish as a result of the importation.

Representatives of the Government of Chile visited China recently to gain a better insight in to the country's salmon farming, fishmeal and fish oil industries. During the visit, the recovery of the salmon industry was analysed and changes were put in place with the aim of improving the health and environmental standards of the fisheries-aquaculture sector.

The practice of discarding fish was banned yesterday as part of the EU Parliament's Common Fisheries Policy reform. The new policy - which comes into action on 1 January 2014 - also includes a legally binding commitment to fishing at sustainable levels. According to the EU Parliament, annual quotas will be governed by scientific advice in order to maintain healthy fish stocks and a prosperous fishing industry.
