01/07/2014: Long-term strategy for Ascension Island fisheries

CEFAS has been awarded a contract by the Ascension Island Government to conduct an independent review and provide advice on the implementation of potential fisheries management regimes in the South Atlantic island.

Cefas will submit its initial report and recommendations to
the Administrator of Ascension Island in September 2014

Cefas, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science in the UK, makes an important contribution to securing healthy and sustainable marine and freshwater environments so that current and future generations can prosper. The review will look at options for the sustainable management of Ascension's fisheries and marine biodiversity.

Cefas scientists will consult a range of Ascension Island and UK stakeholders, to ensure a breadth and balance of input, including government, fishing and conservation interests.

The review will underpin the development of a longer-term strategy for the management of Ascension's fisheries.
