18/07/2014: Bribery of media linked to food industry conglomerate

The article linked to this report suggests bribery of journalists has been undertaken by a large food conglomerate in Thailand.
 
The accusation has been refutted by the company, but it raises several related questions: what if the media pay people for stories they publish and what safe guards do we have when people put up their ‘opinion’ instead of ‘fact’ on internet sites, which in turn creates confusion and potential misrepresentation? 


In our opinion it comes down to the credibility of the publication(s) involved. All commercial organisations would like to influence the media positively. It's the job of the publication to best represent the interests of its reader in what it publishes.
 
But what is clear to us is that as soon as money changes hands the truth suffers.
