13/04/2015: VIDEO: Tainted fish sickens ship's crew; 14 of 19 hospitalized

A health official in New Brunswick, Canada, says food poisoning has hospitalized the majority of the crew from a ship in the port of Saint John, CTV News reports.

Dr Cristin Muecke says 14 of 19 crew members are in serious but stable condition at Saint John Regional Hospital after eating toxic fish on the ship Saturday.

Dr Muecke says they are being monitored closely because the particular type of food poisoning can have neurological and heart-related symptoms.

She says the tainted fish was caught in international waters and there is no risk to the public.

Dr Muecke says the recovery time will depend on the amount of toxin consumed but could take up to several weeks.

Kevin Creighton with Furncan Marine, the agent for the vessel, says the ship involved is the Panama-registered Balsa 85 and the crew is from the Philippines.

Creighton says the five healthy crew members remain on board and he expects the vessel to leave port once the others are out of hospital.
