15/04/2015: Photos and Video: Rio 2016 Olympic rowing lake clogged with dead fish

A lake due to be the stage for rowing events in the Rio 2016 Olympics is clogged with tonnes of dead fish, The Daily Mail reports

For several days now, thousands of small fish called thwaite shad have been washing up on the shores of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.

Local government officials are blaming recent rains and high sea-levels which have apparently caused the water temperature to drop.  Thwaite shad are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations, they claim.

Locals think otherwise, pointing to the raw sewage and rubbish that plague Rio’s waterways.

It happens every year, one long-term resident says.

“It’s one more Brazilian shame.”
