07/08/2015: Shetland salmon producer bought by Cooke Aquaculture

The influence of the Canadian company Cooke Aquaculture has expanded further in Scotland after the firm bought a salmon producer based in Shetland.

Cooke has now acquired Thompson Bros Salmon Ltd, which is located on the Shetland island of Yell, as a consequence of a share deal for a sum, which has not been disclosed.

Two new farms will be added to Cooke Aquaculture Scotland's current operations after the move.

These sites will be located next to Cooke's existing facilities at Unst and Yell.

Cooke chief executive Glenn Cooke said: "After this transaction, Cooke will own all of the salmon farms in the area.

"That will allow us to coordinate management for the entire area and enhance our ability to meet a growing demand for our products."

Cooke now aims to harvest 22,500 tonnes of whole fish in Scotland next year as a result of the combined business.

Last year, Cooke bought salmon farm operators Meridian, which has bases in Shetland, Orkney and the Scottish mainland.

Furthermore, Cooke already runs operations in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Maine, Chile and Spain.
