19/10/2015: Trial begins for man accused of killing shrimp boat captain

A man from Dulac, Louisiana, USA told his girlfriend that he was only trying to protect himself during the fatal shooting of a Vietnamese shrimp boat captain three years ago, according to jail call recordings presented as evidence in his trial today, Maki Somosot writes on the HoumaToday website.

Richard Verdin, 32, of Shrimpers Row, is charged with the second-degree murder of Hung Vo, 49, of Houma, and with the attempted second-degree murder of Vo's deckhand, Duc Pham, on June 24, 2012. Verdin is accused of shooting Vo in the chest after unsuccessfully trying to gun down Pham on a dock near the end of Bayou Grand Caillou, authorities said.
