01/11/2017: Making Omega-3s cool: Aker BioMarine wins awards for its work on health promotion

Aker BioMarine just took home the Complementary Medicine Innovation Award, granted by the Complementary Medicines Australia, for its work on omega-3 evangelism in Australia

Last year, Aker BioMarine formed the Omega-3 Index Project to bring more attention to omega-3 insufficiency, which has become a global health concern.

Since the program was extremely well-received in Australia, the company launched it on an international level.

www.akerbiomarine.com
“This concern of omega-3 deficiency is too important to ignore and knowing your Omega-3 Index should be as important as knowing your cholesterol. Having control over your number will help you make important adjustments to your diet, which will significantly reduce your risk of heart disease and other health issues,” says Matts Johansen, CEO at Aker BioMarine.

As part of this health awareness program, 5,000 Australians measured their omega-3 EPA and DHA levels in red blood cells during the past 12 months using the Omega-3 Index Test.

With the Omega-3 Index Test, everyone has the ability to help identify, correct and maintain healthy levels of omega-3s, which is essential for good overall health.

In addition to the Innovation Award, Aker BioMarine also took home the gold medal for its 2016 annual report in the idea and design category at Farmandprisen 2017, the prestigious Norwegian award handed out since 1955.

Aker BioMarine’s website came in third in the best website idea and design category.

“We are passionate about what we do and all credit goes to my colleagues who show such dedication and do remarkable work,” says Matts Johansen, CEO at Aker BioMarine.

As part of the global health campaign, last week Aker BioMarine released a film, directed by a Norwegian award-winning director Per-Olav Sørensen to draw attention to chronic lack of omega-3s in people’s diet.

“We have taken on a giant mission to improve human health. From Australia to Norway, the omega-3 deficiency is globally relevant and does not discriminate. More than 80 percent of the world’s population exhibits insufficient levels of omega-3. We want to be a game-changer and for us to succeed we need to be world-class in everything we do,” says Mr Johansen.

01/11/2017: Ocean Summit: Only one month to go

This 2017 edition of the Sustainable Ocean Summit (SOS), organised by the World Ocean Council (WOC) looks very promising!

The number of registrations has never been so high one month before the event, with 300 high level participants expected. This three days conference event provides a yearly review of status and trends in Ocean economic activity. The 2017 edition will be held in Halifax, Canada, 29 Nov – 1 Dec 2017.

Program with speakers
The up to date program is now available with confirmed speakers. The latest version of the program, including a detailed schedule can be viewed HERE.

Three reasons to attend the SOS 2017
A great opportunity to meet decision makers and high-level representatives from all the sectors of the Ocean Business Community: shipping, oil and gas, fisheries, aquaculture, seabed mining, tourism, renewable energy, ports, dredging, mining, submarine cables, marine science, engineering and technology, the maritime legal, financial and insurance communities, and others – as well as ocean stakeholders from the government, inter-governmental, academic and environment communities. Through its various workshops, this edition will enable more interaction between Key Speakers and SOS 2017 participants.

Ocean Year: the SOS 2017 has been mentioned in many medias and the context is highly positive to such a unique gathering: 2017 is the year of the Ocean and the future, with the first UN Ocean conference, and for the high seas, the decision to start new negotiations on its governance.

The UN conference goal was to mobilise action to implement the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

The theme of the SOS 2017 is based on this SDG and titled “Business Leadership and Business Opportunities”.

SOS 2017 at the heart of the Canadian blue economy: Canada, with its three bordering oceans (Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific), is affected by Ocean climate change, and this year celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation is largely highlighting Ocean themes.

Among those themes: Ocean planning, Ocean observations, Innovation and Research for a better Sustainable Development of seas and Oceans. Nova Scotia is a strong maritime province, with one-third of R&D in the region focus on Ocean technologies and the highest concentration of Oceans-related disciplines in the world with 450 PhDs.

And finally, Halifax is the home of world-renowned Ocean-related research institutions: Bedford Institute of Oceanography (the largest centre for Oceans research in Canada), the Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise (IORE), Dalhousie University (with more than 100 researchers focusing on Oceans and ocean technology) and the NRC-Institute for Marine Biosciences.

Get to know the Sustainable Ocean Summit
It is the only international ocean business event to provide a yearly review of status and trends in ocean economic activity. It is organised by the World Ocean Council (WOC).

The SOS is uniquely designed to bring together leadership companies from the diverse Ocean Business Community: shipping, oil and gas, fisheries, aquaculture, seabed mining, tourism, renewable energy, ports, dredging, mining, submarine cables, marine science, engineering and technology, the maritime legal, financial and insurance communities, and others – as well as ocean stakeholders from the government, inter-governmental, academic and environment communities.

Last year, the Sustainable Ocean Summit was held in Rotterdam. Over 200 participants gathered to discuss the role of the ocean business community in addressing critical marine environment and sustainability challenges.

SOS 2016 brought together a wide range of industries involved in the use of marine space and marine resources. Attendees were primarily high-ranking executives and senior environment and sustainability officers from the Ocean Business Community.

Representatives of international organisations, government agencies, and academic research institutions were also in attendance. The theme of SOS 2016 was “Ocean 2030: Sustainable Development Goals and the Ocean Business Community”.

The conference sought to build on the highly successful discussions held at SOS 2010 in Belfast, SOS 2013 in Washington DC and SOS 2015 in Singapore.

31/10/2017: Aller Aqua celebrated the inauguration of its sixth factory

On the 31st October Aller Aqua Group inaugurated its sixth factory – Aller Aqua Qingdao

The inauguration came just a month after the inauguration of the company’s Zambian factory.

“Inaugurating 2 factories in 2 months is exceptional”, Hans Erik Bylling, Group President for Aller Aqua Group, explains.

Aller Aqua Qingdao

“We have had a few busy years leading up to the inaugurations and now we are finally ready. I am proud of what we have achieved.”

Anders C. Bylling is the Managing Director of Aller Aqua Qingdao and son of Hans Erik Bylling.

Anders explains that the process of building a factory in China has been long.

“We have had some delays along the way, but we reached our goal. Our Chinese team has worked exceptionally hard to have everything ready for the inauguration. It has been a very good day with almost 200 participants for the opening itself, and almost 300 participants to the International Cold Fish Aquaculture Technology Seminar we organised the day before.”

Aller Aqua chose to establish themselves in China without a Chinese partner, like other feed companies have done.

Hans Erik Bylling explains, “We chose to establish the factory without a local partner to ensure that we can continue to deliver the products that the customers are familiar with. We have delivered high quality aquafeed to China for the last 20 years, produced under European standards, and we will continue to run the factory like we would in Denmark. We will do this by sourcing the raw materials in Europe, and ensure a highly trained local team which knows how to comply with the European standards.”

The factory in China will focus on the growing cold-water species aquaculture industry in China. And it has therefore been natural for Aller Aqua Qingdao to facilitate the first International Cold Fish Aquaculture Technology Seminar on the 30th October in Qingdao.

The host of the seminar is the renowned Heilongijang River Fisheries Research Institute (HRFRI) of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Science.

The program includes many interesting speakers from both China and Europe, a visit to Aller Aqua Qingdao and concludes with a shuttle bus to China Fishery Expo.

30/10/2017: Animal health sector supports commitment to responsible antibiotic use

NOAH believes the progress reported in the Veterinary Antimicrobial Resistance and Sales Surveillance (VARSS) report for 2016, which shows significant reductions in antimicrobial use, demonstrates that UK vets and farmers are making every effort to prescribe and use antibiotics responsibly

NOAH Chief Executive, Dawn Howard said, “It is encouraging that the work of the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA) is having a meaningful impact, which will help veterinary antibiotics to remain effective and available for use in the future.”

Building on the results of the VARSS Report, RUMA has today announced new species-specific farm antibiotic targets, as a result of the work of the RUMA Targets Task Force (TTF).

These will further reduce, refine or replace antibiotic use across eight different livestock sectors.

On the TTF, Dawn Howard commented, “We are confident that the work of the Targets Task Force will continue to promote and support responsible use in the coming years, whilst at the same time ensuring animal health and welfare is maintained.”

She went on to say, “We must continue to ensure animal health and welfare are not compromised by working to promote measures to prevent disease, including encouraging uptake of vaccinations and other alternatives where they are available. To complement responsible use efforts our sector is committed to investing in the development of alternative products to prevent disease.”

“NOAH is also a signatory to the HealthforAnimals Global Animal Health Sector Commitment and Actions on Antibiotic Use, which shows how the whole animal medicines sector is working collectively on a global level, echoing and complementing these UK activities.”

“Taken together, these measures will preserve the health and welfare of our farmed animals, whilst using antibiotics responsibly, to the benefit of us all,” she said.

30/10/2017: First spat from Scottish pilot mussel hatchery goes to sea

The first mussel spat reared at the Scottish Shellfish Hatchery Stepping Stone project in Shetland will be transferred to on-growing sites at sea next week

The positive milestone was announced by Daniel Cowing, Aquaculture Scientist & Technician at the NAFC Marine Centre, and Michael Tait, Chairman of the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group, at the Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers (ASSG) annual conference in Oban.

(CC BY-SA 2.0)
There, industry members were given an update on the £1.7m 30-month collaboration which also involves Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.

Daniel Cowing said, “We’re not yet achieving the quantities we would like but we are now seeing larvae develop through to spat stage and settle onto ropes, which is a major advance in itself. The next step will be taking the ropes offshore, where the spat will be closely monitored over a growing period of two years.”

Michael Tait added, “It’s a positive position in which to end what has been a challenging but ultimately insightful first year. We’ve learned lots about feed requirements and spawning. Now the key focus is on survivability and bacteriology. Get that right and the implications for the industry are very exciting indeed.”

Also speaking at the ASSG annual conference was Robin Shields, Aquaculture Innovation Manager at SAIC, who provided an update on two additional collaborative projects: one to research the technologies and processes that will help optimise larvae and spat; the other to develop the genetic tools for selective breeding.

Robin commented, “Both projects are specifically designed to provide scientific support to the Stepping Stone pilot, so we’re very much looking forward to seeing representatives from the different project teams come together in Shetland next Tuesday 31 October to review the advances made during the 2017 season and help plan for 2018.”

The mussel industry is now estimated to be worth over £10 million a year in Scotland alone. A commercial-scale hatchery would see this value increase further, resulting in higher and more reliable yields, new jobs and greater export potential.

30/10/2017: At the forefront of the aquacultural technological revolution

Record attendance - up 30 percent in 2017

The development of commercial aquaculture in Norway began around 1970, and with the majority of its towns and cities being coastal, it was and remains a prime country for the marine aquaculture industry to absolutely boom

www.aqua-nor.no
Salmon farming is by far the heart of Norwegian aquaculture production, amounting for more than 80 percent of the farmed fish. Rainbow trout, which features this month as International Aquafeed’s ‘Expert Topic’, is also very important, alongside cod, halibut and shellfish species such as blue mussels and oysters, all of which are in the process of become commercially viable sectors.

Of course, aquaculture itself in Norway dates back to 1850 when the first brown trout were hatched, with a history this rich in the practice it is unsurprising that by 2015 nearly 1.4 million tonnes of aquaculture production was recorded.

It is for reasons such as these that events such as Aqua-Nor and Nor-Fishing are so imperative for the global fish farming industry. Not to mention that in today’s industrial climate technology is this region is an absolute hot spot for development and research – and the focus for which Aqua-Nor is so internationally famous for.

The Crown Prince of Norway
Speaking of famous, as aquaculture is such an integral part of Norwegian culture it makes sense, but still a notable privilege, that the event was attended and enjoyed by Crown Prince of Norway, HRH Haakon Magnus, who even partook in some of the VR (Virtual Reality) opportunities that were on offer.

Occurring between August 15-18, 2017, the event, which was held in the Trondheim Spektrum Centre in Trondheim and organised by Ola Eriksen (who features as this month’s interview in International Aquafeed also), boasted record-breaking figures.

The show reported that no less than 27,110 visitors enjoyed the exhibition, representing an increase of more than 30 percent compared to the 2015 edition.

Kar Steinsbø, Project Manager, Nor-Fishing Foundation, commented on the event, as “A strong professional programme, excellent stands, professional stand personnel all round the exhibition and a good feeling through all four days have made Aqua-Nor 2017 an exhibition to remember.

In addition, there has been a marked increase in the number of students visiting Aqua-Nor and this holds great promise for the future of the industry.”

Visitors per day
Tuesday – 6550
Wednesday – 8043
Thursday – 8211
Friday – 4306
Total – 27,110

The visitors came from 71 countries, including the International Aquafeed team from both the UK and Argentina, and there was a solid increase in the number of exhibitors also. A total of 600 exhibitors showed off their technology and shared their expertise at the stands displayed across the many exhibition areas. Exhibitors represented 25 countries.

However, there was pressure on space both from a display point-of-view and from visitors attending. Good weather on the opening day made it pleasant in the forecourt of the complex as visitors queued to register or to collect their badges. However, wet weather did visit Trondheim on the third day of the show.

Work is now underway to increase the exhibition areas, by replacing several of the halls making up the sports complex with new facilities to be constructed in time for both Nor-Fishing 2018 and Aqua-Nor 2019. There are also plans to improve access and parking and to capitalise on the ‘harbour area’ where demonstrations of fish cages and floating equipment were on display.

27/10/2017: Aker BioMarine releases a global health campaign to draw attention to chronic lack of omega-3s in people’s diet

“The truth is not always what it seems”

With this message, Aker BioMarine launches a global health awareness film starring a young woman, Maria, living an active life in the big city. Her daily routines include hardcore exercise and a balanced diet.

Seemingly, Maria’s lifestyle ticks all the right boxes and gets her five stars on the health chart. She gets a rude awakening as she goes back to her roots and visits her family in Greenland, just to discover the imbalanced life she has been living the last years. Maria’s daily habits are simply not enough to maintain a truly healthy and balanced life.

Finding the right fats
The hypothesis of a possible relationship between omega-3 consumption and reduced risk of heart disease appeared in the late 70’s when two Danish scientists sought to understand how the Greenland Inuits could eat a high fat diet and still have low levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

“To set the scene, we travelled back to a remote area in Greenland. We followed a family living in Kapisillit, a fishing village, to experience first-hand how they live as one with nature, unaffected by the modern Western diet and lifestyle,” says Per-Olav Sørensen, the Norwegian award-winning director of the film.

“With this raw scenic film, we want to touch a nerve and make people reflect on their own lives, and find the motivation to improve life balance,” says Mr Sørensen.

Awareness is key
Statistics show that we are becoming unhealthier because of the lifestyles we choose to live. A recent study published in Nutrients, compared data from the United States and Germany and concluded that despite adequate knowledge of the health benefits and food sources of omega-3, 98 percent of the participants fell below the optimal range.

“Having insufficient omega-3 levels puts us at higher risk for chronic disease, such as heart disease, suboptimal brain function, increased likelihood for major depression, and other health issues,” says Dr Nils Hoem, Chief Scientist at Aker BioMarine.

A recent report from the World Economic Forum and the Harvard School of Public Health paints a gloomy picture that during the next 15 years healthcare costs related to treating lifestyle diseases that can be avoided by consuming more omega-3s will accumulate to more than 22 trillion dollars globally.

“Education is key when it comes to preventing these type of lifestyle diseases, which is why we are making awareness a priority. Finding the right balance is key to putting us on the right track of becoming healthier,” says Dr Hoem.

Sharing the knowledge
To create positive change, Aker BioMarine, a leading supplier of krill-derived products to the consumer health and wellness and animal nutrition markets, is working with industry partners to reach consumers through their channels and network.

27/10/2017: Biorigin launches new product and makes presentation on the use of additives at FENACAM 2017

Biorigin launches Biotide Extra, a product with high concentration and availability of nucleotides and protein, which contributes for the development of fish and shrimp and supports their natural defences

www.biorigin.net

At Fenacam, visitors to Biorigin’s booth # 101 will have the opportunity to know the newest solution in natural ingredients for fish and shrimp: Biotide Extra: Its high nucleotide concentration (15 percent minimum) contributes for the development of fish and shrimp in the early production stages (larvae, fingerlings), and supports natural defenses during challenge, because those nucleotides are readily available to meet their physiological needs.

In addition, it is included at low levels in the feed, allowing more space in feed formulation and it is more cost-effective compared with products with lower nucleotide levels.

MacroGard, the most studied beta-glucan in the world, with proven resistance and performance enhancement results, contributing to the profitability of production, will also be displayed.

MacroGard increases survival rates during the larval phase, under stressful situations caused by handling and transport, during bacterial and viral challenges, in addition of boosting vaccine response.

Biorigin has a complete portfolio of natural solutions for the improvement of fish performance, and therefore their productivity.

The portfolio includes the prebiotic ActiveMOS, which preserves intestinal integrity, favoring nutrient absorption; HiCell, which is an ideal alternative for the supply of highly digestible proteins, and to improve feed quality, as it reduces the level of fine particles in pelleted and extruded diets; and Selemax, which is an organic selenium source that enhances body antioxidant defenses and increases the levels of this important trace mineral in the meat of the supplemented fish.

Producers will also be able to clear their doubts on the use of additives in fish feeds by attending the talk given by Biorigin’s technical expert Fernando Roberti, which will be held on November 17 at 11:40 am at the Aquaculture Symposium.

Fenacam will be held from November 15 to 18, at the Convention Center in Natal, RN, Brazil, visit the website, HERE.

27/10/2017: Fish farm water treatment: New multi-approach for application of sodium ferrate

by Mr Gianluigi Negroni and Mr Federico Rivalta

Aquaculture is known worldwide to play an important and promising role in food security

It provides great business and livelihood opportunities to many communities. As better expressed by management expert and economist Peter Drucker, “Aquaculture, not the Internet, represents the most promising investment opportunity of the 21st century.”

(CC BY-SA 2.0)
Ferrate(VI) (FeO42-) is proposed as a viable means for more cost-effective aquatic animal farming. Tests done using ferrate(VI) have showed its effectiveness in wastewater disinfection.

Many studies have been conducted on the use of ferrate(VI) as disinfector, oxidiser, and coagulant, as well as for the removal of medicines, ammonium, cyanides, sulphides, phosphates, arsenic, estrogens, anilines and phenols in water and wastewater treatment.

However, limited publications have been made on the use of ferrate(VI) in aquaculture. Hence, this research will further demonstrate its most promising technological characteristics, and a new-patented machinery model will be presented in this paper.

As seen in Figure 1, shrimp-farming production is concentrated in Asia. Forty-four percent of fish stocks have been heavily exploited.

Farm-raised fish have the lowest feed conversion ratio (estimated feed required to gain one pound of body mass) compared to other farmed animals, and will likely increase exponentially in the coming years compared to fish from wild catch.

It is clear that there will be an increase in aquaculture activities globally, but space and water resources will continue to be limited, hence, intensive and efficient aquaculture systems are all the more needed.

Open and closed systems
Modern aquaculture systems could be divided into two main types: open and closed systems. In open systems, used water is discharged into the environment. In closed systems, a part (and rarely all) of the used water is recirculated after specific treatment.

In the first type, solids and dissolved nutrients are discharged into the environment.

In the production of aquatic animals, common wastes are composed of:
• Nitrogen (N)
• Phosphorous (P)
• Carbon (C)
• Orthophosphate (PO43-)
• Soluble waste – carbon dioxide (CO2)
• Ammonia (total amount nitrogen)
• Residues and trace elements (antibiotics, heavy metals, disinfectants)

To reduce the negative impact from wastes, common applications include the introduction of:
• Bacteria that degrade ammonia into urea and nitrate (NO31-)
• Plants that transform waste into biomass (bioremediation)
• Micro and macro algae that use the sun and then transform waste into biomass

Moreover, the pathological area is also a very interesting area of ferrate use. These applications have their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Moreover, ferrate(VI) is an easy, readily available and affordable material. This paper presents some patented equipment for ferrate(VI) production and utilisation in coagulation, chemical oxidation and disinfection of water and wastewater treatment.

Figure 2 shows the different disinfection and oxidant capabilities of common water and wastewater treatment chemicals. Until now, there are only a few large-scale patented equipment are being tested—Ferrate (VI) efficacy has already been tested and demonstrated for disinfection against common aquaculture virus, spores, bacteria and parasites.

Ferrate(VI) is also very effective in degrading heavy metals, PCBs, pesticides, antibiotics and other residues thus is considered very useful in aquaculture. It is well known that diseases from bacteria, virus and parasites provide problems particularly to the aquaculture industry (finfish, crustacean and others), affecting food security and causing economic losses.

Climatic change is also exacerbating these losses. The new ferrate technologies could be considered as an important mitigation and be adapted as a strategy for combating farm disease vulnerability and risks. Ferrate(VI) is not a biocide and can be safely used in the aquaculture industry.

26/10/2017: Advanced communications networks across Mexican fish farms

by InfiNet

Fish farming, or aquaculture, is rapidly becoming the leading method of satisfying food demands in today’s climate

Founded in the mid 1980s, Regal Springs was the brainchild of Rudi Lamprecht, a former United Nation aid worker who was looking for a sustainable food and protein source for the community of Java.

www.infinetwireless.com
Today, the company has farms in Mexico, Honduras and Indonesia and exports to mainly US and European markets. All of the Regal Springs facilities are spread across Mexico and due to the remote rural locations of the farms and wide geographic expanse of the facilities, sustaining a robust communications network is challenging.

Due to the lack of fibre network coverage in rural areas, a heavy reliance on long distance fixed wireless broadband networks is a necessity, but Regal Springs’ existing wireless system was lacking in capacity.

This meant that the company was unable to transmit in real-time all data from the farms as well as surveillance footage back to the administration centre. Instead, Regal Farms had to download and send data manually by courier between facilities.

Cost-effective wireless
Regal Springs had previously installed several Point-to-Point (PtP) links with Cambium that linked their various facilities and offices, but this was not adequate for its growing needs and only achieved capacities of 20 percent of actual brochure specification.

This was a much lower capacity than what was required for the proper operation of communication systems between the farms and the various offices on the mainland. Regal Springs fish farms needed to find a cost effective wireless communications infrastructure that performed better than its current wireless network in a short time.

The system needed to work across large distances and rural locations, removing the manual processes of communication between all facilities and tackling some of the challenging environmental factors.

Essentially, Regal Springs wanted to end up with a single network providing video surveillance, voice and data communications between its production areas, administrative offices and packing plant, while keeping both capital and operational costs of the system to a minimum.

Regal Springs had looked to expand its existing Cambium network, but after talking to various system integrators, it decided also to look at other options that would future-proof the growth of its wireless infrastructure.

Mexico-based Inxite is a value-added integrator specialising in wireless communications, CCTV and infrastructure solutions, and introduced Regal Springs to the InfiNet Wireless brand. As a part of the initial proof of concept demonstrations, Inxite designed the network not only for optimum performance through the radio planning and network reliability, but also the environment.

As the farms were situated on open water they had to function via solar energy due to the lack of AC power sources close to the lake. The equipment also had to be able to withstand the harshest environments and be grounded to withstand the atmospheric discharges such as lightning.

The InfiNet system was selected following field trials and the final installation consisted of both Point-to-Point (PtP) and Point-to-MultiPoint (PtMP) solutions.
